Retail ready packaging category programmes

We have been a sole training provider of this North American multinational retailer for retail ready packaging (RRP) since 2009. An IGD performance improvement programme was designed and has become a key element of our customer’s supplier education and development initiative.

Their challenge

A very large proportion of food and grocery products were arriving from consumer goods suppliers in cases that were making it difficult for store staff to, identify the product, find the right shelf location, open, put out on shelf, fill the display cube without sending part filled cases back into the warehouse. These packs were also difficult for shoppers to find and pick the product they want to buy. Early attempts at supplying RRP had been accepted by the retailers buyers but were not fit-for-purpose in store. On-shelf availability and store productivity were poor and sales were suffering.

Our solution

Our client needed help educating over 150 suppliers to understand retail operations and how they could influence on-shelf availability and appearance. A six month IGD performance improvement programme was designed; adopting a category by category approach to the development of RRP. First, delegates were taken in-store overnight to work alongside replenishment teams to experience first-hand what makes it easy/difficult. Subsequent review sessions then helped cross-fertilise ideas amongst category teams and start the process of developing category toolkits with packaging suppliers showcasing their innovation pipelines. Later, proposed solution were tested by teams during an in-store session. In the final session category teams made presentations to the retailer’s senior leadership of merchandising, marketing and supply chain.

The outcome

The category by category approach meant decisions about fixtures and fittings could be factored in, product suppliers to the category worked together on solution sets to enhance the appearance of the category, and category specific toolkits were produced. Consumer goods suppliers participating in the programme developed fit-for-purpose retail ready packaging solutions. A significant degree of up-skilling of the retailer’s merchandising and packaging teams also took place.
